Cerebellar stimulation is a system of physical exercises aimed at improving functions of the cerebellum and basal ganglia — brain structures actively participating in the formation of movements, speech, coordination acts. It was developed based on the North American program «Learning Breakthrough».

DO YOU NEED THIS?

The damage of cerebellum and basal ganglia is the cause of tremor, disturbances of muscle tone, problems with coordination, smoothness and accuracy of movements.

This leads to:

  • Cerebellar atoxia (consequences of the stroke, brain injury);
  • Parkinson’s disease (parkinsonism);
  • Chorea;
  • Athetosis:
  • Hyperkinesia;
  • Dystonia etc.

Sessions of cerebellum stimulation are prescribed to patients with above mentioned problems.

WHAT PROBLEM DOES IT SOLVE?

In order to think and act human’s brain has to constantly process information about the state of the body and the state of the surrounding space. This information gets into the brain with the help of sensory organs (sensory systems).

Then the primary processing of this information is carried out by the basal ganglia, which transmit to the motor cortex areas information necessary for movement planning.

The task of the brain is to unite and analyze this information, separating the important from the secondary. Cerebellum is responsible for this.

The cerebellum is the controller of our brain. It is connected to all parts of our brain and processes all the information from the senses that enters the brain. Based on this information, the cerebellum corrects movements and behavior.

Functions of the cerebellum and basal ganglia can be trained. We achieve this with the help of cerebellar stimulation.

HOW DOES IT HAPPEN?

The program is based on the exercises on the balance board of Dr. Belgau. Additionally, exercises with fit balls are used.

During physical exercises with assistance of a physical therapist, the patient learns to understand the boundaries of own body and manage own movements. An important element of the session is the transition from performing exercises based on imitation or physical assistance to performing exercises based on verbal instruction.

During the sessions the patient restores motor planning — the ability to think through the sequence of his actions.

Thanks to this technique, coordination is improved, muscle tone is normalized, smoothness and accuracy of movements are restored.

WHAT ARE THE RESULTS?

‘Learning Breakthrough’ program was created in the USA in the 1950s. It appeared to be excellent for the treatment of patients with consequences of stroke (impaired coordination and motor programs), Parkinson’s disease (Parkinsonism), hyperkinesia, etc.

WHAT IS THE NOVELTY AND DIFFERENCE FROM OTHERS?

«Neurological Clinic of Dr. Yatsenko» is the only clinic in Ukraine that uses cerebellar stimulation in rehabilitation programs of patients with the consequences of stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, hyperkinesia, dystonia.

HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKE?

It is required 3-4 sessions per week. The course consists of 10-15 30-minute sessions. There are no age restrictions.
